Someones in the kitchen ...

The wonderful aroma of beef stew is permeating the house. I've got it in the slow cooker, and as the hours go by the disparate ingredients are melding into a rich, tasty singularity. Mmmm, I can hardly wait for dinner.

I like cooking. It's creative, I usually finish the project I start, and the results are, on the whole, yummy. I've been doing some baking over the last few weeks. My brother Kelvin boards with me, and he asked if I could make something for him to take to work instead of him buying 'goodies' (he works in a supermarket with a pretty good bakery), so I've been using him as a guinea pig. He's a BIG lad but over the last year he has lost well over 30 kg and is still trimming down. I thought my diabetic cooking books could provide some healthy treats, and they haven't disappointed.

So far I've made: Date and walnut loaf, Banana bread, Gingerbread, and Apricot Loaf. Kelvin has even made his very first Banana cake!

I didn't much care for the gingerbread but Kelv enjoyed it. It has blackstrap molasses in it. Molasses has a taste and savour all of it's own. It's yucky! And yet, seductive. I think a song from the past describes molasses admirably:
'Molasses, molasses,
icky, sticky, ooey, gooey,
crazy kids stuff'

(words thanks to mum and dad!)
